What is cochlear otosclerosis?
A) When otosclerosis causes CHL
B) When otosclerosis causes SNHL
C) Stiffening of cochlear basal membrane
D) Stiffening of the stapes footplate
E) None of the above

Otosclerosis is due to abnormal bone turnover in the labyrinthine bone of the inner ear which causes stiffening and eventual fixation of the stapes footplate to the oval window.  This causes a CHL.  It can be treated with Stapedectomy.  Otosclerosis located in the otic capsule involving the cochlear endosteum and causing SNHL is called cochlear otosclerosis.

A)Cholesteatoma
B)Myringosclerosis
C) Otomycosis
D)Otitis Externa

Free Response Question:
Name 3 of the classic signs and/or symptoms of cholesteatoma.

Quick Facts:

Cholesteatomas cause CHL by either mass effect (increased mass of TM or ossicles thus impairing movement) or by causing erosion of the middle ear ossicles leading to ossicular discontinuity. Stiffening of the stapes footplate is caused by otosclerosis.
